The living cannot enter the Soul Cairn. Let Serana make you a vampire, or let her trap part of your soul, which lowers health, magicka and stamina. Inside, find Valerica, kill the three Keepers that feed her prison and face the dragon Durnehviir.

Characters who are already vampires walk straight in. If you were soul trapped instead, your Soul Essence Gem lies in the Soul Cairn itself: pick it up to undo the penalty.
